Smart Daughter (A Story)

SMART Daughter !!

In a small Indian town, a small business owner owed a large sum of money to a Sahukar (Money Lender). The Sahukar was a very old, unattractive looking man.

He decided to offer the businessman a deal that would settle the entire loan, with a condition that, he will settle the loan only if he could marry the businessman’s beautiful daughter. The proposal was accepted with a shock and little disappointment by businessman.

The Sahukar said that he would place two stones in a bag, a white stone and a black stone. The daughter would then have to pick up one stone from a bag. If it was black, the loan will be settled fully, but the Sahukar would then marry her, and If it was white, the loan would also be settled , but the daughter wouldn’t have to marry the Sahukar.

The garden was full of stones and the sahukar picked up two stones from the garden and put it in his bag. While he was picking them up, the daughter saw that he had picked up both black stones. He then asked the daughter to pick up one stone from the bag.

The daughter was in shocked but didn’t reacted, she was left out with 3 options:
[1] Refuse to pick a stone from the bag.
[2] Take both stones out of the bag and expose the Sahukar.
[3] Pick a stone from the bag with awareness that it will be a black stone and she will have to marry this ugly old man for his father’s to get free from debt.

The smart daughter, came forward and picked up a stone from the bag, and before looking at it ‘accidentally’ dropped it into the midst of the other stones in the garden..
Then she said:
“Oh, how stupid I am. I dropped the stone which was picked up, but anyways, let’s check the bag for left out stone… so we all will be know which one i picked up.”

The stone left in the bag is obviously black, and with no choice, with the fear of getting caught of cheating, the Sahukar had no choice but to accept that the stone picked up was white… so he will have to clear the entire loan without marrying the daughter of businessman.

Moral of the story
It is always possible to overcome any tough situation in life with Smart & Out of Box Thinking, its not necessary to pick up only available options !!
